Pattern Languages for Societal Change, held at Danube University Krems from October 19 to 21, 2017.

Overview

A working meeting for a wide field.

The second world conference followed the successful gathering in 2015. Its aim was practical as much as academic: to show how pattern work travels between disciplines and to bring examples from outside the research community into the conversation.

Over three days, contributors presented and discussed more than fifty contributions from thirteen countries, including Japan, the United States, and across Europe. The programme covered social change, architecture, design, pedagogy, and pattern science.

The conference was organised by the Departments of Interactive Media and Educational Technologies and of Building and Environment at Danube University Krems.

Programme

Topics on the table.

The call invited work from established fields and from practitioners whose knowledge rarely reaches a conference stage.

  • Architecture
  • Urbanism and regional development
  • Design
  • Media, arts, and information technology
  • Pedagogy, education, and learning
  • Social activism and innovation
  • Grassroots movements
  • Everyday applications
  • Additional disciplines

Fifty one abstracts were collected in a single programme document. The full papers and workshop reports later became the third volume of the PURPLSOC proceedings.

Record

The conference in the archive.

Photographs, recordings, and reflections from the three days are collected in the blog and media pages.

Why the series matters

PURPLSOC alternates with related pattern language gatherings and returns to Krems every two years. The 2017 edition was the second world conference in that series.
